Untitled (Subway Drawing)

Keith Haring

Haring garnered public attention through drawing in chalk on empty ad panels in the New York subway system. As he crafted hundreds of these subway drawings, New Yorkers would stand to watch, and sometimes critique, the production of the works. Engaging with the frenzied energy of the subway system, as well as the temporal nature of such chalk drawings, Haring was able to use the underground as a laboratory for experimentation. He was often arrested for his troubles.
