Marks & Spencer Leeks and a Pineapple

Julian Dyson

Some of Dyson's drawings of the early 1970s follow the Kitchen Sink idea of social realism, which had first appeared in painting in John Bratby's works of 1954 and had become fashionable in stage and television drama, particularly in the mid-1960s. Ordinary scenes, tightly observed, are presented and examined with no attempt to add glamour. Although Dyson's work of this period is honest and stylistically very much of its time, the gritty Northern angst celebrated each day in the ultimate Kitchen Sink serial of the day, Coronation Street, does not fully infuse Dyson's relatively idyllic Cornish life and work, amply summarised by his choice of topic in this drawing, and this period of his output, although skilful, is relatively short lived.
