Composition

Joan Mitchell

The early 1970s was a crucial point in Joan Mitchell's career, her first museum show took place in 1972 at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, New York. The exhibition was titled My Five Years in the Country and some 59 paintings, representing the body of work created during her time so far in France, was enthusiastically received. Writing for The New York Times, Peter Schjeldahl predicted that Mitchell would ultimately be recognized "as one of the best American painters not only of the fifties, but of the sixties and seventies as well." The present work, although intricate in size, is a powerful composition inspired by the French landscape around her.
